Honouring Our Stories
The shutter is open. The camera is in focus. Aboriginal students
are ready to share life in Thunder Bay through their lenses.
Photovoice, a YouthScape Thunder Bay project, created over 300 photographs
and a video documenting the lived experiences of Aboriginal students. The
project engaged youth from remote Northern Communities, giving them an
opportunity to photograph, narrate, and document their urban lives while
going to school in the city. Photovoice gave students a chance to express
themselves to policy makers, schools, the community and each other, to
encourage dialogue and create change. More... |
5Qs - Prenatal Possibility
Sacha Sauve has always been a driver. Just 26, she’s fully trained as a doula—but volunteering to be on-call 24 hours a day as a birth coach for various non-profits just wasn’t high stakes enough for her. Constantly pushing the limit of how many innovative ventures a person can undertake, Sauve decided to add to her repertoire of skills and schooling by approaching LifeCycles with a proposal to start a youth-led, youth-directed prenatal program: Solid Foundations for Empowering Relations. Rocking Out in HRM: A Youth Grant Success Story
Those who know thirteen-year-old Tyson Boyd describe him as a true artist. He has a passion, knowledge, and love of music that is infectious. So when he had an idea to create a weekly program for youth to drop in and jam together, the Sackville Boys and Girls Club wanted to support him to make it happen. This dream team had only one thing that was missing…start up money. So Tyson applied to YouthScape’s Youth Grants Program for funding and was approved. Transforming Communities
Entering the front doors of the Hickman building on the University of Victoria campus I was met with the uplifting and funky sounds of the Brand New Waves, a local Victoria band who provided background music during the 1st annual Transforming Communities Symposium. I picked up my registration package and entered the main meeting space which was filled with youth, elders, and adults from across Vancouver Island and Vancouver. What great energy!
